USGBC is in Santa Fe this week, hosting a summit on resilient cities.

USGBC, along with the National League of Cities and the Urban Land Institute, is hosting the 2016 Resilient Cities Summit in Santa Fe, New Mexico, from Dec. 7–9. The second annual summit will convene mayors, senior city officials and nationally recognized experts in sustainable development, finance, real estate and infrastructure to discuss how cities can become better prepared for the risks associated with a changing climate and the onset of natural disasters.

The focus of this year’s summit is how smart land use can be used to advance resiliency, including how the environmental planning and economic development decisions that city leaders make today can strengthen their communities and leave a legacy for future generations.

By helping to convene this event, USGBC provides an environment in which city leaders can highlight their own efforts to improve resilience in their communities, specifically in land use and community development. These experts will have the opportunity to share their best practices for resilience and challenges with others across the country.

In coordination with the summit, USGBC has released a new policy brief focused on resilience. This resource highlights the work USGBC is doing to advance resilience in buildings and communities. Our work with LEED, PEER and SITES supports the goals of resilience through energy efficiency and reduced environmental impact, in addition to helping buildings and communities adapt and respond to severe weather events. The brief identifies why resilience is a comprehensive approach to building and community sustainability.
